              Kat Yassim
Kat Yassim is an Associate Professor in the UJ Faculty of Education. Currently she teaches at postgraduate levels (Hon, Masters, PhD and ADE), most
of which are online programmes offered by her department. She is an innovative tinkerer and experimentor of alternative pedagogies and offers classroom experiences that invite students to co-create learning. Together with her students she is developing conceptions around the kind of learning (r)evolution needed for education in the South African context in relation
to 4IR. Her current research interests at UJ focuses on leading learning
in the era of 4IR. She also coordinates the Sandbox project in partnership with the DBE Innovation Unit, the NECT where she works with school principals to transform learning cultures of low quintile schools towards 4IR imperatives. Prof Yassim uses critical pedagogy and a capabilities approach to teaching, learning and research. In recent years she subscribes to the use of participatory methodologies to research “with” and not “on” participants. Sustainable and transformative leadership of learning is a prominent feature of her approach towards solving some of South Africa’s big questions in education.
