30 SOCIETAL IMPACT AND SUSTAINABILITY The awareness of, and active participation in, issues of social responsibility and environmental sustainability is central to FADA’s ethos. This influences not only our teaching and public image, but also how we conduct our daily operations. The faculty holds paperless meetings whenever possible and has recycling stations for paper, glass, and tin placed throughout the building. Staff is reminded on a regular basis to reduce electricity consumption by turning off lights and using space heaters as little as possible. FADA also places a significant emphasis on addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), integrating this commitment into both teaching and learning initiatives and our community engagement programmes, for example: Fashion Design played a crucial role in sustainabilityfocused community projects by participating in the “Sustain Her” Project facilitated by Zanné de Meillon in partnership with Love Our City (NPO) and entails recycling textile waste into reusable sanitary pads that are gifted to schoolgirls in Johannesburg who are affected by period poverty. The aim is to reduce school absenteeism resulting from a of lack of appropriate menstruation products, thereby improving the likelihood that girls will complete their education. Third year Bachelor of Architecture students participated in a Timber Design Student Competition hosted by the University of Pretoria Timber Conference. The competition sought timber designs expressions that emphasized recycling, reuse and sustainable production.
