2025 FADA Annual Report

29 FADA prioritises resource enhancement and preservation for optimal student learning and faculty research. Facilities like studios, workshops, and computer labs are carefully maintained to support academic programmes. The FADA FabLab introduces undergraduates to digital design thinking and aids postgraduates in refining digital design methods. Equipped with modern technology, the FabLab fosters a dynamic learning environment for innovation, high-impact research, and transdisciplinary collaboration among faculty. Arts and Culture manages various UJ campus facilities, including the UJ Arts Centre, UJ Art Gallery, Experimental Theatre, and Bunting Theatre. The division’s priorities remain resolving the leaks at UJ Art Gallery, UJ Arts Centre and Old Central Kitchen that pose great risk to the art collection and sprung floors in the dance studios. The studios at the Bunting Building also require waterproofing. Addressing these risks remains a priority. Current Art Collection storage spaces also lack adequate security, environmental control, and proper storage solutions. A comprehensive valuation of the UJ Art Collection was completed by Strauss & Co., processing 1 867 items. The collection was valued at R57 583 480, reflecting a decrease from the 2021 desktop valuation due to market-related factors. The GSA’s occupation of its floor at JBS Park has provided the School with space to thrive, however, the amenities and equipment continue to require the GSA’s input and budget allocation. The GSA has undertaken a 3-phase fitout, both in equipment and refurbishment of spaces to accommodate the School’s teaching and operational needs. This involves reconfiguring and equipping Zone A (staff offices and the School’s primary events space), the Studio space, the CADLab and the Workshop space. The GSA has applied for funding for Phase 1 and 2 of this project via the annual budget cycle and will continue to do so in successive years. RESOURCE MANAGEMENT The division’s priorities remain resolving the leaks at UJ Art Gallery, UJ Arts Centre and Old Central Kitchen that pose great risk to the art collection and sprung floors in the dance studios. The studios at the Bunting Building also require waterproofing. Addressing these risks remains a priority.
