34 Our Design Our screen design is an extension of our design range, MeshMash, which challenges the concept of furniture and how standard materials are used. The range is made up of steel mesh and solid wood in playful shapes and forms, creating a playground of furniture. Alongside this, we wanted our design to embody a feeling of connectivity. By designing the panels to be made up of various interlocking shapes, the design represents the collective nature that exists within our diverse context. By using recycled electrical cable, the design also comments on how Clout/SA (a design collective) or Nando’s (a place people go to share a meal) can create networks between people. Making use of recycled electrical cable also contributes to sustainability and finds value in materials that have been categorised as ‘waste’. As in our name, Tandem, we appreciate the coming together of ideas, materials, and people. Our entry is run in Tandem with Kelvin Dube, an artist at LAE with a unique vision who discovers his creative sanctuary in the most unexpected of places – amidst discarded materials. Soft wire and the colourful remnants of electrical outer rubber coatings, often overlooked and dismissed, have become the foundation of his artistic playground. While the design was generated and is submitted by Tandem Design House, the execution of it will benefit from Kelvin’s skillset of working with one of the key materials. This collaboration was created in support of appropriate and sustainable inner-city renewal, and the execution of this design would take place between residents of Victoria Yards and Living Artist Emporium.
