Through participation, students tackle projects to illustrate the skills required and the challenges that the discipline offers. Project briefs are created to give students the opportunity to demonstrate the role packaging can play in the supply chain and marketing of a product as well as the benefits and functionality of packaging. The competition is split into three main entry categories: Graphic Design, Packaging Technology, and Industrial Design. According to market research, the most popular products purchased online in South Africa are clothing and shoes. The competition challenge was to design a packaging solution for either of these items or both, purchased online while considering sustainability and the unboxing experience. We are excited to announce that seven of UJ’s third-year Industrial Design students were selected as finalists in their category, with the top two awards also going to our students. The finalists included Sihle Sibiya, Morgan Potgieter, Leandro da Silva, Minette Ackermann, and Travis Krumples. Johannes Janse van Vuuren won first place for his design of e-commerce packaging for the brand Jonsson Workwear. This is what they have to say about it: About us We are an Industrial Design duo running a furniture design and manufacturing company, Tandem Design House, based in Johannesburg within the urban artisan complex, Victoria Yards. We work with a small team, designing and making custom furniture for private home interiors, restaurants and lodges. We manufacture predominantly in-house and are set up for wood and steel production. Alongside this, we are also continuously developing our own furniture design ranges. As our name suggests, we value collaboration in the coming together of ideas, materials, and people. Our South African context, particularly Joburg, is a central guide in our design decisions. Our furniture strives to be open and honest in mediums and manufacturing methods with an emphasis on quality and detail, while contributing to South African design identity.
