Advancing UJ’s Commitment to Sustainable Development The UJ SJIP advances the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through its collaboration with partner organisations and its focus on social justice education. The programme meaningfully contributes to SDGs, including: • Goal 1 (No Poverty), • Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), • Goal 4 (Quality Education), • Goal 5 (Gender Equality), • Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), • Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities), • Goal 13 (Climate Action), • Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and • Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The programme fosters greater legal literacy, strengthens civil society organisations, and contributes to a more just and accessible legal system. By integrating these elements, the programme aims to equip students with the tools to become ethically conscious and socially engaged legal practitioners, to contribute to the realisation of the SDGs, and to ultimately also boost graduate employability. Bheka Nkosi, who interned at SERI, highlighted specific professional development outcomes: “The learning environment is conducive and also the practicality of the working environment is giving a broader view of what is happening in a workplace and what it means to advocate for social justice.” Transformative Learning in Action: The Pilot Cohort In January-February 2025, we successfully ran the pilot cohort of the UJ SJIP, which provided invaluable learning experiences for three participating students. Feedback from interns highlighted gains in crucial legal research, advocacy, and drafting skills while working on real-world social justice cases. They engaged directly with clients, deepening their understanding of the systemic barriers faced by vulnerable populations. All three students expressed a reinforced commitment to pursuing careers in public interest law. The feedback from the public interest law organisations was also positive, with our partners emphasising the keenness of the student interns to engage with social justice, and the concrete assistance they provided on a range of ongoing matters run by the organisations. The pilot cohort in early 2025 demonstrated the programme’s profound impact on participants. Raeesa Ebrahim, who interned at Lawyers for Human Rights, shared her experience: “It has always been a passion and a dream of mine that I would go into social justice, in spite of the naysayers and the seemingly unavoidable corporate path. Now UJ has given me the invaluable opportunity to take a step towards making that dream a reality by contributing to meaningful social justice initiatives and hopefully, the ability to grow professionally and personally.” The programme thus addresses a critical gap in conventional legal education by providing students with authentic exposure to the complexities of social justice lawyering. The long-term impact of the UJ Social Justice Internship Programme extends beyond the immediate experience of the interns. By providing students with meaningful exposure to social justice lawyering, the programme contributes to the development of a new generation of legal professionals committed to the advancement of human rights and societal impact. In discussion with our three partner organisations, it has emerged that many former law interns choose careers in public interest law, thereby strengthening civil society and increasing access to justice for marginalised communities. The partnerships fostered through this initiative also have a lasting effect, as they create opportunities for continuous collaboration between UJ and public interest law organisations. Furthermore, by embedding work-integrated learning into the legal curriculum, this programme contributes to the broader transformation of legal education, ensuring that graduates are better prepared to navigate the complexities of contemporary legal practice. The programme also contributes to community engagement and is a form of powerful societal impact, given the important work of the partner organisations. 79 A Journey of Innovation
