UNICEF defines innovation in education as the solving of problems in both new and simple ways to “promote equitable learning. 2 The value of innovation in higher education is not simply newness in pursuit of its entertainment value. Rather it is the application of creativity in service of achieving the most socially just higher education possible. In this publication the academics at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) showcase the innovative teaching and learning spaces they have created to bring to life the University’s ‘learning to be’ philosophy. Judge each day not by the harvest, but by the seeds you plant The Division for Teaching Excellence (DTE) sees in its work the planting of seeds – of creativity, of innovation, of excellence and of quality. Its mission – to enable and support teaching excellence - is a wheel in the complex design of UJ’s achievement of its mission. Through the Division and its two centres (the Centre for Academic Planning and Quality Promotion (CAPQP) and the Centre for Academic Staff Development (CASD)), the ongoing development of teaching and learning and teachers is realised.
