FOREWORD Super-charging teaching and learning: A UJ Showcase The exhilaration of swimming upstream in teaching and learning is navigating with and against the currents. The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has set a fast-paced agenda in pursuit of teaching excellence, anticipating and preempting future tides of change. Pivotal to this journey is the constant innovation in teaching seeking new and exciting ways to harness and expand students’ knowledge, experiences and to serve as positive disruptors of growth. The 3rd edition of Teaching Innovation for the 21st Century presents vignettes of innovative practices across a range of disciplines, projects and activities funded through the UJ Teaching Innovation Fund 2022. The continual support from the University Research Committee in funding allocations is crucial to enable academics to revitalize pedagogies and practices. The university seeks to have inspired teaching that meets Ivan Illich’s challenge: to provide for “unhampered participation in a meaningful setting” (19711). Illich continues “most people learn best by being ‘with it’” (Illich, 1970). The sharing of innovative teaching practices serves to inspire and provoke new ideas in the academy. Our University is about looking ahead, and equipping UJ staff and students with skills and attributes that will be fit for purpose in the years to come. Learning about learning, and finding new ways to express this, is part and parcel of the package of excellence that UJ has come to be known for. Fueling and super-charging teaching is at the heart of the true purpose of the university’s raison d’etre. Recognition and acknowledgement of the many ways in which academics innovate their teaching practices is the purpose of this publication.
