Second Project Iteration (Undergraduate): 2022 After the pilot project’s success, a second iteration was undertaken, this time in undergraduate teaching, with second year UJ students from stereotypically ‘opposed’ disciplines of Industrial Design (27 students) and Fashion Design (22 students). This iteration built on the first through the inclusion of pre-and post-project reflections, group discussions and breakaway individual design development sessions between the two departments, to deepen the engagement with and understanding of the topic. Furthermore, this iteration included additional consideration or framing of the digital age, guided by 4IR technology. Although the project was facilitated within two design disciplines, the specific module criteria for Industrial Design (mainly practical) and Fashion Design (mainly theory) required that the brief still aligned with the respective module assessment criteria. Run in a practical module, the Industrial Design students were expected to conduct a full design project following the standard design process from research through to final prototypes. Students were required to present a comprehensive online Behance portfolio entry documenting their design process (research, ideation, development, and refinement). In Fashion Design, as the project was facilitated in a theory module, the students were expected to develop their speculative design concept with an emphasis on articulating their design development through written reflections on their application of the Double Diamond approach (Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver) and outlining the research methods employed for data gathering. Both disciplines were expected to present outcomes using presentation posters, a video, and a 200-word write-up defining the insight or point of enquiry that informed the concept and design of their final project. Outcomes and findings from this iteration will be presented at the Applying Education in a Complex World teaching and learning conference in April 2023 in Toronto, Canada.
