Prof Josef Langerman Head In 2025, Prof Josef Langerman was appointed as the Head of the Centre and CADS also joined forces with the Department of Information and Knowledge Management where they will be housed. CADS functions and an entity that hosts a master’s and PhD Programme in Applied Data Science. It aims to equip commerce students with the analytical and data skills to thrive in the modern workplace. 2025 confirmed an intake of 50 master’s level students out of 700 applications and five PhD students from 15 applications. A further 70 second-year students started their research reports. This in-demand CBE programme is highlighted through an agreement with Vodacom on joint research, short learning programmes and corporate training and close collaboration with the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLAR) at the North-West University to promote text analysis skills in low-resource languages. To facilitate the supervision of such a large cohort of students, collaboration with supervisors from other UJ faculties, such as the Department of Statistics at the Faculty of Science and outside of UJ is necessitated. Focused research at Paycorp, a large payments provider in South Africa, provided insights on the management of ATMs, strategic placement, and the replenishment strategies.
