UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG Centre for Student Health andWellness The University has four centers, one on each campus. Professional nurses provide services five days a week at each Centre, while sessional doctors visit once weekly for serious problems referred by Professional nurses. The Centre primarily offers primary health care to students, focusing on acute illnesses, acne treatment, mental health examinations and management, and referrals to PsyCaD for counseling. Sexual reproductive health encompasses contraception distribution, STI screening and management, cervical cancer screening (Pap smear), pregnancy testing, and referral to safe abortion facilities. One of the essential services provided by the Centre is health promotion, which is done through campaigns, health expos, and on UJfm. The center shares premises with an occupational health clinic for employees. Primary healthcare clinicians provide weekly family planning services for staff members, and emergency medical care when needed. 24 Our wellness section is led by a Wellness Specialist and supported by HIV counselors and Peer educators. HIV counseling and testing are provided, as well as the distribution of female and male condoms, lubricants, and dental dams. It includes a support group for students who have tested positive for HIV and are on the antiretroviral treatment program to provide care and support. The Wellness team is heavily involved in initiatives (cancer awareness, SRH, mental health, LGTBQI+ safe zone awareness) and uses different social media platforms. Regular residential visits are conducted to educate students about sexual reproductive health and risky behaviors and lifestyles affecting their health.
