The creation of the On the Go: Student Online Success (SOS) module
One of the biggest single projects that was initiated during 2020 and further developed during 2021 was the creation of the On the Go: SOS Blackboard Organisation for students. It was conceptualised as a ‘virtual ADC’ and planned to contain bite-sized and multi-format materials focused on one limited topic at a time. SOS development involved the entire
ADC team in creating content. The biggest advantage of creating the SOS module as an Organisation on Blackboard was that it could be made available to all undergraduate students at the same time. The actual module contains a wide variety (more than 80) of discrete topics that have been custom designed to answer very specific questions in a bite- sized and multi-media format. As the site developed, live interaction sessions, webinars and recordings have been added to the repertoire. The module was marketed through various channels to both undergraduate students and their lecturers. This resulted in positive uptake by UJ students with more than 70% of undergraduates using the SOS site over the past two years. The SOS module has proved to be a great success and forms one of the corner-stones of our intentionally blended approach.
