            Andre Van Zyl
André Van Zyl is the director of the Academic Development Centre (ADC) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). He started his career in Higher Education at UJ in 2004 and has subsequently worked at the institution in a variety of roles. During 2009 he was involved in conceptualising and initiating the university’s First Year Experience (FYE) initiative and in 2015 with the establishment of the South African National Resource Centre for the First Year Experience and students in transition. André has a master’s degree in Strategic Management and
a PhD focused on first-year student transitions. His research interests include first-year student transitions and success in the South African higher education environment and the interface between the students and their institutional environments.
Venessa Damons
Venessa Damons is the senior coordinator of the Learning Development Unit. Her career at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) began in 2003 at the Faculty of Education and thereafter moved on to the Academic Development Centre in 2008. She is currently working in the field of mentoring and provides mentor training and academic support to students at UJ. Venessa has a PhD focusing on service learning and professional development.
