In this sense, although Turner was identifying a strategy for overcoming apartheid, the idea of developing a vision of ‘Real Utopias’ could apply equally well to innovative pedagogies and the universities of the future. It would also have merit as a worthy replacement of crisis as the driver of innovation. And in Turner’s understanding of ‘Utopia’, it might be more realistic than the indiscriminate abandonment of common sense!
