6 The Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) operates across three campuses – Auckland Park Bunting Road (APB), Auckland Park Kingsway (APK) and Doornfontein (JBS) – and maintains a longstanding reputation for producing highly skilled graduates for the creative industries, supported by specialised facilities and an experienced academic and professional staff complement. The faculty comprises nine academic departments offering a range of degree and diploma programmes: Architecture, the Graduate School of Architecture (GSA), Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Jewellery Design and Manufacture, Multimedia, and Visual Art. FADA also houses UJ Arts and Culture, including the UJ Arts Centre and the UJ Art Gallery at APK, with Arts and Culture offices located across all UJ campuses. In addition, the faculty hosts two research centres: Visual Identities in Art and Design (VIAD), led by Prof Leora Farber, and the NRF SARChI Chair in South African Art History and Visual Culture, directed by Prof Brenda Schmahmann. The FADA Gallery, library, auditorium, lecture venues and Design Café are located within the main faculty building at APB, providing integrated academic, research and student support spaces. In 2025 the faculty continued to consolidate strategic initiatives established in previous years. Under the leadership of Executive Dean Professor Federico Freschi, and in alignment with the University of Johannesburg Strategy 2035, the faculty met its performance targets while remaining responsive to evolving institutional priorities and opportunities. FADA occupies a number of dedicated buildings equipped with customised studios, computer laboratories, workshops and a fabrication laboratory (Fab Lab) tailored to the needs of its disciplines.
