27 In March 2025, the Faculty acknowledged Barbara Masekela’s receipt of an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of her lifelong contribution to South Africa and the international community. A distinguished poet, educator and activist, she has made a significant impact as a cultural leader and advocate for social justice. Her career includes senior roles within the African National Congress Arts and Culture Department, service as Head of Staff to President Nelson Mandela, and appointments as South Africa’s Ambassador to France, UNESCO and the United States. A recipient of the Order of Luthuli in Silver, she was awarded a Doctor of Laws by Rhodes University, affirming her enduring legacy of leadership and public service.
