57 Melodi: A South African Choral Evolution at UJ Melodi marked UJ Arts & Culture’s first performance of 2024 on 24 February at the Keorapetse William Kgositsile Theatre. Created by former UJ Artist in Residence Sabelo Mthembu, this choral production explored South African choral music’s history and evolution, reflecting on 30 years of democracy through rich vocal harmonies, storytelling, and poetry. Mmakgabo Helen Sebidi’s ‘Ntlo E Etsamayang’ (The Walking House) hosted at the UJ Art Gallery University of Johannesburg Art Gallery, in collaboration with Everard Read Gallery and the Embassy of Sweden, hosted the exhibition Ntlo E Etsamayang (The Walking House) from 6 April 2024. Co-curated by Gabriel Baard and Prof Kim Berman, it featured 28 previously lost artworks by Mmakgabo Mmapula Helen Sebidi, recovered from Sweden after 32 years. The exhibition highlighted Sebidi’s exploration of self-positioning, power, and healing, celebrating artistic dialogue and decolonisation.
