39 Celebrating Women in the Built Environment In honour of Women’s Month 2024, the Interior Design Department at the University of Johannesburg proudly hosted the Women in the Built Environment Initiative — a month-long celebration of the achievements, leadership, and contributions of women within the fields of design, architecture, and the built environment. This initiative, coordinated and facilitated by Interior Design lecturer, Sadiyah Geyer, was designed to inspire, educate, and empower students, alumni, and professionals by highlighting the experiences and accomplishments of women who are reshaping these industries. The initiative consisted of a dynamic series of events, including three guest speaker sessions, a hands-on workshop, an engaging panel discussion, and five spotlights on exceptional women in the built environment. Each component of the series reflected our department’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and leadership in design education. Guest Speaker Series We had the privilege of hosting prominent female professionals who shared their personal and professional journeys, offering invaluable insights into the challenges and triumphs they had encountered in their careers. The guest speakers hailed from diverse areas within the built environment, and their experiences offered students and attendees practical advice on navigating gender-related challenges, breaking barriers, and pursuing excellence in design. The sessions were highly interactive, providing attendees with the opportunity to engage directly with these thought leaders and gain inspiration from their journeys. Workshop on Gender-Inclusive Design In addition to the speaker series, we hosted a workshop on gender-inclusive design. This session explored the critical role that design plays in addressing the needs of all genders, emphasising ergonomics, accessibility, and cultural sensitivity. Attendees were challenged to rethink traditional design paradigms, considering how spaces can be more equitable and inclusive for diverse populations. The workshop encouraged students to integrate these principles into their future projects, contributing to more empathetic and user-centred design solutions. Panel Discussion The month culminated in a powerful panel discussion, featuring women from both academia and industry who spoke about gender equality in design, the unique challenges of balancing personal and professional life, and navigating career advancement in the built environment. This session provided a platform for students and professionals alike to exchange ideas, learn from one another’s experiences, and reflect on the collective efforts required to create a more inclusive and equitable industry. The panellists’ diverse backgrounds enriched the discussion, offering practical insights into how women can lead with confidence and purpose in their respective fields. Spotlights on Women in Design Throughout the month, we also ran a social media campaign that featured five inspiring spotlights on female designers in the built environment. Each spotlight highlighted a remarkable woman whose contributions have made a significant impact in the field, from innovative project designs to leadership in sustainability and education. These spotlights served to amplify the visibility of women’s accomplishments, providing role models for our students and the broader community. Looking Ahead The Women in the Built Environment Initiative was an overwhelming success, thanks to the support and participation of our students, faculty, and industry partners. It not only celebrated the achievements of women but also sparked meaningful conversations about how we can continue to push for greater inclusion and gender equality in the design industry. We are grateful to our guest speakers, panellists, and workshop facilitators for their dedication to sharing their knowledge and experiences. Their contributions have left a lasting impact on our students, inspiring the next generation of female leaders in design.
