Teaching Innovation for the 21st Century | 2025

Figure 1: Green Pedagogical Model (Fox & Wogowitsch, 2021) It is a six-step process that takes a student from a known sustainability challenge towards new perspectives through collaboration, discussion, analysis and reflection (see Figure 1). In this way, transformative learning happens as students deconstruct and reconstruct their knowledge. It is a process of learning, unlearning, relearning (Toffler, 1978) and reflection of a specific sustainability-related problem. Greening education refers to the creation of sustainability-oriented knowledge, skills, attitudes and values. According to Jorgenson (2011), a green pedagogical approach enables the 4Cs (Communication, Collaboration, Creativity and Critical Thinking). It is a transformative approach that engages in nurturing and protecting the essential ingredients of the environment in their day-today life. Alhussini (2020) confirms that the strategies used in a green pedagogical approach include “situated learning, virtual instruction, authentic tasks, competitive learning, and project-based learning.” A green pedagogical approach empowers students to acquire competencies in preparing themselves for an unknown future through learning activities within complex situations.
