Through this project, students transition from theoretical knowledge to practical application, addressing complex urban development challenges and showcasing their readiness for professional engineering roles. Introduction The Capstone Design Project 3 at the University of Johannesburg stands as a testament to the dedication and skill of final-year Civil Engineering Technology students. This comprehensive project focuses on developing Vredebos Township in Boksburg, offering students invaluable real-world experience in infrastructure design and management. Through this project, students transition from theoretical knowledge to practical application, addressing complex urban development challenges and showcasing their readiness for professional engineering roles. Project Objectives The primary objective of the Capstone Design Project is to apply rigorous training to conduct engineering investigations, collect and analyse data, design engineering systems, and write and present technical reports when executing near real-world projects. Students simulate the dynamics of a real-world consulting company. Students work collaboratively in groups, assuming various roles to deliver a complete set of project documents and presentations. These include a Capability Statement, Topographic Mapping, Geotechnical Report, Township Layout, Engineering Services Report, Detailed Design Report, Final Report, and Presentation. This structure enhances students’ practical skills, teamwork, and project management abilities, preparing them for successful integration into the professional realm of civil engineering. Development Description The proposed Vredebos Township, as shown in Exhibit 1, aims to create a sustainable community with diverse land uses, including residential, educational, business, and recreational facilities. The project covers an extensive area and incorporates modern urban planning principles to enhance the quality of life for its residents. Key Achievements 1. CAPABILITY STATEMENT Each student group developed a comprehensive capability statement for their simulated consulting company. This document outlined their expertise, services, and project approach, including details such as company overview, leadership as shown in Exhibit 2, technical capabilities, project portfolio, client testimonials, and commitments to health, safety, environment, and sustainability. This exercise honed the students’ professional communication and marketing skills, crucial for their future careers.
