Introduction Legal education is a unique discipline, and in the South African context, it often starts with studying the Roman legal tradition of classifying law into various disciplines. This process illustrates the interconnected branches of law central to analysing complex legal issues within South Africa’s constitutional democracy. Legal issues are not isolated to the single branch of the law and are ‘inherently multifaceted, often spanning multiple fields, necessitating a holistic approach to legal analysis and representation’ (Business Tech Africa, 2024). These complexities are central to legal education. The Faculty of Law’s Teaching and Learning Indaba held in February 2023 (‘2023 Teaching and Learning Indaba’) focused on many of these aspects, including demonstrating the relevance of legal content, the transferring of skills and knowledge to law students within the constitutional impact and reality of the law in everyday lives, where the legacy of apartheid still influences perceptions of the law as biased and prejudicial. Addressing these aspects forms part of the Faculty of Law’s vision and strategic outlook in legal education. The 2023 Teaching and Learning Indaba considered how this may be achieved within the context of technological advances, specifically that of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, virtual reality (VR) technology, and educational gaming platforms. This engagement triggered the thinking of what was next for legal education in the fourth industrial revolution, eventually giving rise to the idea of developing a virtual reality courtroom game.
