This type of technology may assist educators who conduct field work and or who operate contexts where there is limited or restricted regular contact with students. Conclusion The use of GPs tracking for the recording and monitoring of physical training of medical rescue students was a valuable and interesting experiment for us. Students using the devices reported positive experiences with a number of perceived benefits. Staff and students involved in this pilot project wish to thank UJ for providing the funding to test out this type of teaching innovation. In moving forward, the Department will need to seek innovative ways of securing ongoing funding that would be required, if we were to continue to purchase and issue similar devices to students in this and other programmes that require the development and maintenance of physical fitness as part of the curriculum. Based on our experiences we feel the use of GPS monitoring and tracking technologies may have a wider application and associated benefits. This type of technology may assist educators who conduct field work and or who operate contexts where there is limited or restricted regular contact with students. In such contexts the tracking and monitoring of student movement and related activities may be mutually beneficial, either from a safety, monitoring and or efficiency perspective.
