Building on previous research on this topic in the Industrial Design10 discipline throughout women’s month, students were invited to share their insights related to gender and its effect on their experiences as design students. These insights were written anonymously on colourful pre-printed cards, prompted by topics (Gender, Gender Bias, Culture, Representation and Confidence) on the reverse of the card. Once a card was completed, it was pinned up in a public space as part of an ongoing, interactive exhibition, sparking both reflection and discussion. This installation garnered extensive qualitative data across design disciplines and served as the foundation and inspiration for the greater Unequal Stories project. Figure 2: Unequal Stories Website Stories by Map (2020) Figure 1: Women’s Month Installation in SA and UK (2019) Research Design and Project Planning: 2019-2020 The first phase of the pedagogic intervention included the development of an interactive online platform that would allow for the further sharing of stories, insights, and resources. Using the Unequal Stories website11, participants from a wider pool of universities and the design industry were invited to share their stories and experiences related to gender bias, anonymously. This data was then mapped (with the data gathered from our institutions) through data visualisation, allowing viewers to compare the stories according to tag, location, and discipline.
