During the interview, Dr. Pillay shared valuable advice for young women aspiring to leadership positions. She urged them to believe in themselves, to have faith in their abilities and take on the big opportunities. “Don’t hesitate to apply for leaderships positions,” she said. “Believe in your capabilities and take that step forward. Have faith in yourself and know that you can and will bring a uniqueness to the position like none other.” As we celebrate Dr. Pillay’s accomplishments, we also recognise the broader significance of her journey. STRATEGIC PLANNING SESSION: W&R SETA LEADERSHIP CHARTS FUTURE COURSE The W&R SETA team, composed of The Chair, Dr. Semona Pillay, The Industrial Liaison Officer Sandile Maseko, and Mr. Norman Mafuratidze, met on the 5th of April 2024 in Muldersdrift for a strategic planning session. The team engaged in comprehensive discussions about the ’organisation’s future direction, including reviewing past learning sessions, clarifying roles and responsibilities, and developing new strategies aligned with the SETA’s vision. They also focused on creating actionable plans, considering budgetary implications, and preparing for upcoming presentations to the MOC and GB. The session concluded with the team setting a date for their next meeting to ensure continued progress on their strategic initiatives. THE DREAM TEAM Celebrating the Graduation of the W&R Seta Leadership Youth Project The Youth Empowerment Project of the W&R SETA Leadership Chair aims to equip young people with essential skills for the wholesale and retail sectors, addressing youth unemployment and fostering entrepreneurship. It focuses on both soft and technical skills, provides access to education through bursaries and internships, and creates job opportunities through partnerships with industry stakeholders. The project also promotes entrepreneurship by offering workshops and mentorship to help youth start and manage their own businesses. Additionally, it facilitates industry exposure and networking, allowing participants to connect with professionals and understand retail market trends On the 26th of April 2024, the University of Johannesburg was abuzz with excitement as it hosted the graduation ceremony for the W&R Seta Leadership Youth Empowerment Project. This significant event marked the culmination of a journey for a group of driven and determined students who have completed their Certificate in Retailing, a qualification funded by the W&R Seta initiative. The event was expertly hosted by the charismatic Ntokozo Mokoena, who led the proceedings with energy and enthusiasm, celebrating the graduates’ achievements. Each of these students is now equipped with the knowledge and skills to make a lasting impact in the retail industry, empowered through the financial and academic support of the W&R Seta.
