College of Business and Economics | Annual Report 2024 43 9TH ANNUAL COMPETITION AND ECONOMIC REGULATION (ACER) WEEK CCRED’s conference and capacity building event, the Annual Competition and Economic Regulation (ACER) week, has become the flagship competition event on the continent. ACER is an essential platform for competition authorities, regulators, and practitioners to share knowledge, keep abreast of key developments across the continent, and build networks for collaboration between agencies. In 2024, CCRED, in partnership with the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) and the COMESA Competition Commission, held its 9th ACER and 11th annual CAK symposium on competition law and policy from 14 to 18 October 2024 in Nairobi Kenya. The week comprised three targeted Professional Training Programmes (PTPs) and a conference/ symposium, with more than 60 participants in the PTPs and 100 delegates for the conference, mainly from African countries. A pre-book launch for an HSRC Press book from previous’ years ACER conference paper was also successfully undertaken in Nairobi, Kenya. MCom in Competition and Economic Regulation The MCom in Competition and Economic Regulation is in its eighth year and continues to attract attention from competition and regulatory institutions across the country and other African countries in the region. In 2024 the programme had 11 candidates from countries such as Liberia, Ghana, Botswana, Namibia, Kenya and South Africa, including from competition authorities and regulated sectors. Key highlights on the MCom in 2024 in the first six months include good throughput of students in terms of dissertation submissions and graduations. We maintain a strong complement of lecturers comprising academic and industry experts. Two students have also been awarded a prize to present their dissertations at the Annual Competition and Economic Regulation (ACER) conference in Kenya in October 2024. 2024 also saw the revival of face-to-face lecture blocks with students. The two intensive face-to-face blocks of lectures were successfully completed in April and September 2024, with our international students traveling to JBS Business School for an excellent week of learning and collaboration.
