A further off-shoot of the conference was that UJ was invited to participate in a longitudinal study with Nanyang Technological University, a university from Taiwan, a university from Korea, a university from Thailand, and a Chinese university on Preparing Public Affairs (PA) Students for Future Public Service: Examining a Long-Term Change of Students’ Public Service Perceptions, Values, and Propensity in Singapore and the World. Prof Jarbandhan will be the lead researcher in the African participation. After the conference in Singapore, Prof Vain Jarbandhan met with the Director of Humanitarian Affairs, Janice Leong in Bangkok to discuss funding opportunities for students from the SPMG/ CBE to future events hosted by Humanitarian Affairs, Asia. Additionally, Prof Jarbandhan addressed interns from Humanitarian Affairs in Bangkok. Interns present were from across the globe, including, but not limited to the US, UK, Ireland, Germany, China, Qatar. Prof Jarbandhan addressed the interns on the theme ‘Climate Change in Africa’, based on his co-edited book with the title Climate Change in Africa. Adaptation, Resilience and Policy Innovations. The outcome of the meeting resulted in Janice Leong inviting the Dean, Prof Ntsalaze, to send a delegation of up to 15 student leaders who share a commitment to peacebuilding. The 3rd Global Peace Summit will be held at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand, 10-12 January 2024. Moreover, Janice Leong introduced Prof Jarbandhan to Prof Prinya Thaewanarumitkul from the Thammasat University in Thailand. Prof Prinya holds the position of Vice Rector for Administration and Sustainability at Thammasat University in Thailand. Discussions on collaborations are ongoing between the SPMGP and Thammasat University. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AND IMPACT Prof Jarbandhan has partnered with SALGA in the Social Partners in the Professionalisation of Local Government. He serves on the SALGA research hub on the professionalisation of local government. A research article by Prof Pillay (Stellenbosch) and Prof Vain Jarbandhan, titled ‘Technological Adoption and Doctoral Supervision during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Challenges and Opportunities for Students and Supervisors in South African Universities’, was published in the African Journal of Public Affairs, 14(1): 89-111. Prof Jarbandhan co-edited a book titled Climate Change in Africa, Adaptation, Resilience and Policy Innovations, with Dr Michael Addaney (Ghana) and Dr William Demenu (Germany). The book addresses issues pertaining to sustainability and climate governance across the African continent. The book was published by Palgrave Macmillan. A paper titled, ‘Upscaling Digitalisation in Africa’s post-COVID 19 Recovery Path, A Comparative Analysis’ was presented at the Winelands International Conference in Cape Town on 16-18 October 2023. The authors and presenters were Dr A Gwiza (Zimbabwe), Ms Moira Tambaoga (Zimbabwe) and Prof Vain Jarbandhan.
