College of Business and Economics | Annual Report 2023 50 ƒ On 11-14 October 2023, the Chair was a co-organising partner of the International GLOBELICS Conference, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. The conference theme was ‘Innovation-Driven Knowledge-Economies and Transformation in the Global South’. Two of our emerging scholars (Dr Dennis Osei and Dr Larry Onyango) presented papers at this conference. ƒ Dr Dennis Boahene Osei presented at the African Philanthropy Conference at Dakar & Sally; Senegal held between 31 July to 4 August 2023. SUSTAINABILITY, INNOVATION AND THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION (4IR) 4IR In 2023, the Trilateral Chair completed a study on ‘Adoption of Frontier Technologies in Africa’, with data from South Africa, Ghana, and Tunisia. The study was supported by UNCTAD. In June 2023, the Chair collaborated with Research and Innovation Systems for Africa, UK Aid, and the University of Nairobi to deliver a one-day training programme targeting policymakers, decision makers, and funders about the significance and utility of Emerging Digital Technologies (EDT) and X-DATA. This initiative aimed to deepen awareness and encourage the integration of these technologies in achieving national sustainable development goals. The programme was expected to significantly impact the participants’ comprehension of EDT and X-Data, while also informing them about the pivotal role these technologies can play in shaping future policy and funding decisions. Societal impact and innovation The projects in our research portfolio show the diversity of impact areas and types of impacts emerging from our research activities, and innovation, which fall across all themes.
