College of Business and Economics | Annual Report 2023 49 POLICY AND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENTS AND ACTIVITIES ƒ Dr Dennis Boahene Osei (PDRF) was appointed Associate Editor of the Ghanaian Journal of Economics. ƒ Dr Ellen Chipango presented at the Gender and Energy Symposium, University of Twente, Netherlands. In January 2023, Prof Jeremy de Beer (Professor of Law, University of Ottawa) presented a seminar to reflect on ‘Regulation for Innovation: Conceptualizing a Development Research Agenda for Inclusive and Sustainable Economies in Lowerincome Countries’. Further engagements and activities include: ƒ 10 May 2023: Presented by Dr Dennis Boahene Osei (Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UJ TRCTI) on ‘Impact Investing in Ghana: A Multiple Case Study’. ƒ July 2023: Prof Alejandra Boni (Professor at the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, Spain, and a deputy Director of INGENIO, CSIC-UOV) and Dr Diana Velasco (Research Fellow at Ingenio, CSIC-UPC) engaged with our PhD students and postdoctoral researchers on transformative policy. There was also an interesting session on participatory action research and experimental policy engagement. ƒ 16 August 2023: Presented by Dr Shawn Cunningham (TRCTI Visiting Professor of Practice) on ‘Experience from using innovation and transformative frameworks to support change’. ƒ August 2023: Hybrid workshop on ‘African innovation, entrepreneurship, and energy transition’ by Visiting Professor Prof Jacob Park and guest speaker Prof Michael Morris. ƒ 16 August 2023: Presented by Dr Shawn Cunningham (TRCTI Visiting Professor of Practice) on ‘Experience from using innovation and transformative frameworks to support change’. ƒ August 2023: Hybrid workshop on ‘African innovation, entrepreneurship, and energy transition’ by Visiting Professor Jacob Park and guest speaker Prof Michael Morris. POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES The Chair has two new postgraduate programmes, namely the MPhil with specialisation in Innovation and Development and the DPhil with specialisation in Innovation and Development. These interdisciplinary programmes are open for admission. They are the first of their kind to be offered at any South African higher education institution and are set to deliver cutting-edge research that will inform innovation policy and the scholarly field of innovation and development. The programme trains the next generation of scholars, practitioners and policymakers who will go on to further study and promote innovation relevant to their communities. Such initiative reflects the academy’s commitment to bridging the gap between academia and policy and to equipping future scholars with the skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to policy debates and societal advancement. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES Our students and emerging scholars were supported to present in various international events such as: ƒ In December 2023, Ms Gaboile Mabeba (PhD student at the Chair), presented her research on ‘The relationship between indigenous knowledge and 4IR digital technology in South Africa’ at the SADC Secretariat Workshop on Indigenous Knowledge Systems.
