This important programme is aimed at mid/senior government officials from across Africa, helping to build capacity among policymakers. The theme for 2023 was ‘Financing Industrialisation in Africa’. Prof Tregenna’s commitment to dissemination, policy engagement, service and leadership activities related to industrial development and policy in 2023 entailed more than 20 major public presentations, including several international keynote addresses. These included several invited presentations at high-profile events hosted by various United Nations organisations and other international institutions. She delivered numerous academic and training lectures, some to high-level policymakers. As a member of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council, she advised President Cyril Ramaphosa on economic policy and attended several meetings with government and policy institutions, and international bodies. She is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), serving on committees on Science for the Reduction of Policy and Inequality, and on the Just Transition, as well as the Membership Advisory Committee for Humanities and Social Sciences. She served on various boards, councils and panels, including the DSI Panel of Experts on Data Analytics; the Higher Education, Science and Innovation (HESI) Think Tank; the Board of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), appointed by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Science and Innovation, and on the Board’s Research Committee; the National Research Foundation (NRF) Reviews and Evaluations Standing Panel; the Board of the Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO) as well as the Board of the Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ). She serves on the AfCFTA (African Continental Free Trade Area) Trade and Industrial Advisory Council; the Advisory Council for the IDEAs (International Development Economics Associates) network’s Advanced Certificate Programme on Research in Political Economy; the Scientific Committee for – and is a lecturer in – the African Programme on Rethinking Development Economics (APORDE); the organising committee of the African Industrial Policy for the 21st Century (AIP21) network as well as the steering committee of the Rethinking Economics for Africa (REFA) festival. She is a member of the team leading the International Economic Association’s Women in Leadership in Economics Initiative (IEA-WE), a multi-year project focused on enhancing the role of women in the global economics profession; a Fellow of the Development Leadership Dialogue at SOAS, University of London, and served on the ‘Task Force on Employment of the Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD)’ residing with the Columbia University and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), chaired by Nobel Prize laureate, Joe Stiglitz. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES We have collectively published 62 peer-reviewed journal articles and four books, as well as several working papers, policy briefs and other research outputs. Our collaborations have emphasised strengthening the knowledge base for industrial development in Africa, while at the same time achieving a global footprint across African, European, South American, North American, and Asian countries. Our research activities explored the economics of innovation and related measurement frameworks focused on health, energy, and re-industrialisation, as well as the regional industrialisation landscape.
