Researchers at SARChI Industrial Development produced many outputs during 2023, including from our postdocs and international research associates. Our team collectively published 62 journal articles and four books. Research papers continued to be developed and published in the Working Paper series and Policy Brief series that were launched in 2021 with the aim of disseminating research, stimulating policy debate, and identifying collaborative policyorientated solutions through new knowledge. We hosted, co-hosted, or partnered in several major engagement events, including the Third Young Scholars Conference on Structural Change and Industrial Policy in Africa; the 2023 TIPS Annual Forum themed ‘Global Structural Change: Implications for Southern Africa’; the annual Rethinking Economics for Africa (REFA) Festival; and the fourth edition of the Industrial Policy for Policy Makers (IPPM) training programme aimed at building capacity among policymakers from across Africa. This is in addition to several impactful seminars, colloquia, webinars, and symposia. TALENT MANAGEMENT AND CAPACITY BUILDING During 2023, our staff complement in addition to Prof Fiona Tregenna comprised Senior Researcher Prof Alexis Habiyaremye, Senior Research Associate Dr Elvis Avenyo who gave half his time to the Chair and half to CCRED, as well as administrator Mrs Koketso Manyane, Project Manager Gill Scott, and research assistants. Our affiliates include four distinguished visiting professors, six visiting professors, two professors of practice, three visiting associate professors, 26 senior research associates and two research associates. Among these are leading global scholars, who also published journal articles and were engaged in SARChI-ID activities in various ways. We are delighted to have such a large and dynamic team with related research interests, making for vibrant exchange and development of ideas. Our student supervision during 2023 comprised seven postdoctoral research fellows, 11 doctoral students, 11 master’s and six honours students. Of these, three master’s and six honours students completed their programmes. We provide our students with a range of additional training and development activities, both within and outside of UJ. We continued to host our regular Industrial Development and Policy Seminar Series. This series provides opportunities for students, postdocs, and staff to present their research in a seminar format, which serves a vital role in exchange of ideas and capacity building. Our students are provided with valuable feedback on their research from experts in the field, and gain experience in presentation skills. The DSI project on measurement frameworks related to innovation led not only to some postdoctoral research fellows having the opportunity for mentored research, but also to an open training workshop on the Economics of Innovation, with opportunities to engage with the experts who delivered lectures. We held a colloquium on innovation and capabilities in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries that brought together several SARChI-ID affiliates and researchers, some of the leading scholars in the field of medical and healthcare innovations, to share their research and findings. Included among the presenters were Prof Antonio Andreoni of SOAS, University of London and Prof Dinar Kale, Professor of Innovation and Development at the
