College of Business and Economics | Annual Report 2023

College of Business and Economics | Annual Report 2023 41 DSI/NRF SOUTH AFRICAN RESEARCH CHAIR IN INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT OVERVIEW 2023 was another exciting year for the DSI/ NRF South African Research Chair in Industrial Development (SARChI-ID), extending and building on the previous range of fruitful collaborations, innovative and impactful research, and stimulating events. Our activities fit into the following broad and mutually supportive categories: ƒ Undertaking research of high quality and impact; ƒ Building capacity, through postgraduate supervision, additional training of our postgraduate students, and capacity-building more widely (beyond the university); ƒ Policy development and public engagement. We are delighted with the significant progress made in all three areas during 2023. Our activities in 2023 saw extensive research collaborations driving inter-, trans-, and multidisciplinary research that contributes to a rigorous evidence basis for policy. We have undertaken substantial research projects with policy engagement aspects and implications, including for the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), for the National Research Foundation (NRF) and for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). 2023 saw the successful conclusion of the Industrial Development Think Tank (IDTT), a partnership between the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic), SARChIID and the Centre for Competition, Regulation and Economic Development (CCRED), hosted at CCRED. There was further progress with the ‘Accelerating Vaccine Production in Africa Project: A Centres of Excellence Initiative’. These initiatives are leaving Prof Fiona Tregenna Chair
