College of Business and Economics | Annual Report 2023 22 TEACHING AND LEARNING INNOVATIONS IN 2023 Artificial intelligence, such as ChatCPT that was launched for public use, in 2023 challenged the CBE lecturers to grapple with such tools as this. Teaching innovations that involve technology but also allow students to connect with content, assessments and the mode of delivery were embraced. Several teaching innovations in the CBE resulted from meeting the needs of students and bearing in mind work readiness. Some of the prominent innovations that leverage technology include: ƒ The development of a multilingual virtual assistant by Dr Ward and Dr Cunningham. ƒ The development of an AI tool for Ideation by Dr Janse van Rensburg. ƒ In Financial Investment Management a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and Python is introduced to students in teaching Property Valuation Management. ƒ In STH a Virtual Reality facility that is part of an Erasmus+ funded project. ƒ In the School of Economics, a digital pen was introduced to support facilitation on mathematical economics. ƒ Other innovations that allow lecturers to grow their own competencies involved toolkits for lecturers and their students that range from guiding the supervision journey in School of Management (shared with the rest of the College). Rethinking how the various dimensions of teaching and learning may be applied to meet the needs of future fit students have also enabled innovation during 2023 for example: ƒ Several block release classes were conducted to accommodate working students who are enrolled in the MA CW programmes in SPMGP. ƒ First year pitches on knowledge portals were introduced in SCiiS. ƒ In IPPM the Master’s in Industrial Psychology programme at IPPM has proposed an entire new approach with modules in blocks with fewer days allocated for most modules. Monthly team coaching sessions will also become an integral part of the student’s personal and professional development. ƒ In AIS a student automated assessment planner (SAAP) was developed to allow staff members to indicate their assessment dates in time and intelligently suggest suitable dates on a quest to support student productivity and increase the success rate. STAFF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT The need for staff training and development in 2023 was great as staff embraced blended learning and innovative methods to teach after the COVID-19 pandemic. Workshops and open discussions in the Teaching and Learning domain were held throughout the year to stimulate conversation and good practice. These included: ƒ Generative AI Chatbot Technology ƒ An assessment workshop Generative AI Chatbot Technology Workshop
