12 My trip to China Quinton Shibambo, a second-year Diploma Marketing student, entered the Chinese bridge proficiency competition, which won him the opportunity to travel to China for the summer camp. See below as he shares his experience with us: “I was one of four South Africans chosen to travel to China for culture exchange under the Chinese bridge programme from 16 to 29 August 2023. I was in Beijing from 16 to 20 August, and the first few days in Beijing were admittedly very rough. However, it became better when we started meeting the other foreigners as well as experiencing the Chinese cuisine. This is when I truly started to immerse myself in the culture, food and explored what the country has to offer. I LOVED the taste of nearly everything . From 21to 29 August I was in Shanghai, which was the highlight of my trip! I experienced the bullet train, which was amazing. I was with the Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) and being there truly made me happy; I felt like a student again, but this time it was like being a student in the movies. We were at the Hongkou Campus of SISU, and we had more freedom and time to explore the campus culture. The next few nights I experienced the night life of Shanghai and the safety of China. Walking at night and riding bicycles around the city truly was a cultural reset. The trip took me to landmarks and historical sites and allowed to me to experience life in China. China is giving students an opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture and offering further opportunities to study there as well as potentially get a job there. I come from the University of Johannesburg Confucius Institute (UJCI), which provides programmes in Chinese dance, wushu, language learning, and cuisine. Through the UJCI I joined the Chinese bridge programme, and was afforded the opportunity to travel to China, which was a beautiful lifetime experience for me.” Internships with Lions cricket team Two Advanced Diploma in Marketing students got an amazing internship opportunity with the Lions cricket team, which started on August 1, 2023. Excitement was in the air as they entered the working environment. This is what they had to say: “I am excited to share my early impressions as a Marketing intern at Lions. These initial weeks have been a journey of discovery where theory meets real-world practice. It is fascinating to see how classroom concepts translate into the dynamic world of work. From brainstorming sessions that spark creativity to collaborating with the team on crafting campaign strategies, every day brings new insights and growth opportunities. As I continue to navigate this exciting journey, I am excited to develop my marketing skills further and to contribute to exciting projects ahead.” Thokozani Mahlobo ”As a new marketing intern at the Lions, I just got the privilege to work alongside their marketing team to promote the DP World Lions Cricket brand, engage with the fans, and elevate the brand’s visibility. My responsibilities include assisting in media planning and executing marketing campaigns for matches and events, and contributing to game day experiences. Overall, this internship will nurture my passion for marketing and provide a deep appreciation for the behind-the-scenes efforts that contribute to the success of a cricket team.” Cebelihle Gabuza
