Prof. Josef Langerman speaks at University of Manchester’s Global Development Institute Every year the University of Manchester’s Global Development Institute (GDI) visits Cape Town and surrounding areas to expose their Master’s students to the issues and opportunities in developing countries. Prof. Josef Langerman from the Department of Applied Information Systems was invited to give a lecture on IT strategy on 30 January 2023. The aim was to give the GDI’s students a sense of what is happening in the boardrooms of the financial sector of South Africa. The group also visited Capitec, where its CIO and CEO gave an overview of their strategy. The students concluded that the IT strategies of the large banks in South Africa are all roughly the same, covering themes such as simplification, resilience, digitisation, cloud, big data, and AI, but that they differentiate themselves in execution. The Global Development Institute is a world leader in IT for development (IT4D), and aims to strengthen the ties between the two departments through these interactions. All these events aimed to accelerate skills development among the youth and to develop business startups that will boost the South African economy.
