24 Events & conferences AI Day marked the official launch of the Centre for Applied Data Science In celebration of the partnership between the Toulouse Business School (TBS) Education and the University of Johannesburg (UJ), the newly established Centre for Applied Data Science (CADS) at the School of Consumer Intelligence and Information Systems hosted Artificial Intelligence (AI) Day on 7 October, with the goal of infusing data science into the teaching and research at the College of Business and Economics (CBE). This is not common, since most data science programmes are designed for the sciences. The purpose of the event was to connect and showcase research, teaching, and learning. Industry experts from financial institutions and academics from different tertiary institutions were also invited to share their experiences and insights. ViceChancellor Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala gave the official opening address, and elaborated on how the ability to analyse data and use it is going to be one of the biggest business innovations in the future. School of Consumer Intelligence and Information Systems Director Prof. Mercy Mpinganjira gave the welcoming address, and shared her excitement about the Centre’s establishment. The day was filled with incredible and impactful local and international industry and academic speakers. Prof. Kelvin Bwalya, CBE Vice-Dean, shared a message of appreciation with the collaborative partners of the CADS, and also extended his appreciation to the Head of the Centre for Applied Data Science, Prof. Hossana Twinomurinzi and to the whole team for their hard work of successfully establishing the Centre. The Centre was then officially launched by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Internationalisation at the University of Johannesburg, Prof. Saurabh Sinha. CAD’s vision is to make data science more accessible within the UJ CBE community in its teaching, research, and community/practice engagements. The decision-making landscape in South Africa is becoming more challenging amid the societal challenges that we already face. We therefore need novel ideas, some of which can only be discovered by applying data science. We are already beginning to gain some of these insights, and we expect one day to make a significant dent in solving these challenges. AIS virtual book club The Department of Applied Information Systems (AIS), in partnership with the UJ Library, hosted Dr. Roche Mamabolo, Director at Lora Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at a virtual book club session that took place on 4 October 2022, facilitated by Prof. Roelien Brink. These sessions are held with the aim of encouraging AIS students to read outside their academic literature. The prosperity paradox: How innovation can lift nations out of poverty by Clayton M. Christensen was the book for discussion. Dr Roche Mamabolo shared the perceptive insights he had gained from the book, and had a question and answer session with the audience.
