Wania Malik wins the STH Rising Star Alumnus Award A highlight of the evening was, of course, the presentation of the STH Rising Star Alumnus Award and STH Golden Circle Alumnus Awards, celebrating and recognizing the work of alumni who have demonstrated excellence and innovation in their respective industries. Wania Malik s journey began in 2014 as a management trainee at Sun City, following the completion of her B-Tech Degree in Hospitality Management. Ten years later, with a master’s degree in Tourism and Hospitality, under her belt, Wania is the Assistant General Manager at one of City Lodge’s flagship hotels in Pretoria. Doubling the STH Impact through Fundraising From event tickets sold, pledges for the STH Alumni Plaques, bids for the silent auction and in-kind sponsorship received, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our industry partners for their support in making the event possible. Seán Patrick Maher is the 30th recipient of the STH Alumni Golden Circle Award The prestigious STH Golden Circle Alumnus Award, first established in 1988, was awarded to Seán Patrick Maher. Almost 39 years since Seán first stepped foot onto the hallowed grounds of the old Hotel School, located in Braamfontein at the time, he was recognised as the 30th recipient of the STH Golden Circle Alumnus Award. In his acceptance speech, Sean related stories of his time at the hotel school, much to the audience’ delight. This included some words of wisdom to young alumni, particularly those who are still starting off in the industry. He also added the following pearls: • Operate with honesty and integrity • Have a balance in your life – but with a caveat: in the early stages of your career, the scale must be strongly tilted to hard work The 2024 STH Alumni & Industry Black-Tie Affair was not only a celebration of achievements but also a reminder of our shared commitment to creating a thriving, inclusive, and forward-looking industry. We look forward to celebrating with you again next year as we continue to honour our alumni, inspire our students, and foster connections that will shape the future of tourism and hospitality.
