2023 Annual Report | Division for Teaching Excellence

successful visit from the Gauteng Department of Health to UJ’s Nursing facilities, which took place in March 2023. The Department of Psychology contacted CAPQP in November 2023, as part of their preparations for their SERs for the Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology and Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology, which will be visited by the HPCSA in 2024. Quality is not an act; it is a habit. Aristotle The University is committed to continuous quality improvement and maintaining excellent standards across the three core areas: teaching and learning, research, and community engagement. In 2023, the CAPQP continued to interrogate concerns raised in the programme reviews and review of assessment undertaken from 2020 to 2021. In its ongoing drive to provide students with quality programmes of learning, intensive reviews of undergraduate assessment, moderation, and the role of service modules in curricula were either completed or initiated in 2023. The review of undergraduate assessment was completed in 2023, and feedback on all findings provided to the last STLC of 2023. A review of the Extended Curriculum Programmes (ECPs) and of the quality of internal and external moderation UJ were completed in 2023 and reported on to STLC in 2024. These thematic reviews are detailed and comprehensive, ensuring a thorough analysis of what is identified as a concern. Faculties are willing participants in reviews, and much support both for the reviews and for the subsequent improvement activities is in evidence. Professional Body Reviews CAPQP is integral to the management of UJ’s interactions with professional accreditation bodies. In 2023, the Bachelor of Engineering Technology Civil underwent a re-accreditation visit by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) from the 3rd and 4th of August 2023. A mock audit in preparation for the visit was held on 5 May 2023. In preparation for the interim visit, 15 consultations were held, which Prof K Menon and the CAPQP team attended, CAPQP staff facilitated briefing sessions, held SER development workshops, assisted with critical reading of several drafts of the SERs, and assisted with drafting responses once the reports from ECSA were received. CAPQP representatives attended both ECSA training and mock audit sessions. We did not have any doubts about the thoroughness of our preparations because of Prof Menon and Dr Castrillon. Your department, Prof Menon was with us all the way, helping to ensure the required quality. We are really grateful. The South African Council for the Project and Construction Management (SACPCM) visit for the Bachelor of Science in Construction and three Bachelor of Science Honours degrees was completed in March 2023. The visit was successful, and resulted in a positive outcome, with all programmes accredited. The self-evaluation report for the Health Professions’ Council of South Africa (HPCSA) for the Biokinetics degree was finalised and submitted. The site visit took place from the 17th to 19th May 2023. The report was received at the end of 2023, with work on the responses to the minor points raised being undertaken in time to meet the response deadline of March 2024. Similarly, CAPQP staff supported the Department of Nursing in their Thanks, Mthu for your excellent guidance as always! I think that went very well – a really engaging panel with a good mix of insights from all angles. 2023 ANNUAL REPORT DIVISION FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE 74
