Academic Planning CAPQP manages the programme planning lifecycle and provides advice, support, and workshops on programme types and requirements to academic staff. Through the Programme Working Group (PWG) and other relevant internal processes, CAPQP ensures adherence to the UJ governance requirements. The quality of applications, whether for internal or external approval by the DHET, CHE, and SAQA is part of CAPQP’s mandate. The PWG is a quality structure managed by the CAPQP and governed by a Charter. Through the PWG, CAPQP staff and the various faculty and administration representatives work together to refine the programme applications prior to submission. All new programmes – whether whole programmes or short learning programmes – must come through the PWG, which also considers amendments to existing programmes. PWG recommends these for approval by SENEX / Senate. CAPQP staff provide secretariat services for the PWG, whose work has resulted in application that are complete, coherent, and adhere to internal policies and external regulatory requirements. Staff in the Centre orientate and train new members of the PWG about its roles and processes. PWG members are requested annually to evaluate the effectiveness of the working group in supporting the processes of programme development. The CAPQP staff is well-versed in supporting programme planning and in contributing to curriculum processes in the development of new programmes, and making amendments to existing programmes (whole programmes, whether in contact, distance, or blended mode of delivery), and short learning programmes. Intensive interactions on the design and approval of all learning programmes, including short learning programmes (SLPs) ensures the same level of quality in SLPs, whether formal credit-bearing or non-credit bearing. In addition, CAPQP is part of the Medical Task Team which is developing the proposed Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP) for UJ. The approval of the UJ Medical Programme Business Plan by the DHET and the Department of Health in 2023 means that the Faculty of Health Sciences will be able to submit its application for the GEMP to the UJ’s governance structures, and to the DHET, CHE and HPCSA, as required. CAPQP works closely with Central Academic Administration (CAA) which manages the University’s Programme and Qualifications Mix (PQM). Maintaining an accurate PQM is a critical activity and entails regular review and updating so that all the programme information aligns with what is accredited by the HEQC, and what is reflected on the SAQA database. As part of its work with the CAA and the Department of Student Finance (who liaise with NSFAS), CAPQP undertook an intensive verification of the PQM, the UJ ITS, and the SAQA website. The verification process identified errors and omissions in the PQM and on the SAQA website, which were provided to SAQA via the CHE, as required, and to the DHET, and which are in the process of being corrected by these bodies. 2023 ANNUAL REPORT DIVISION FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE 68
