Teaching Advancement at Universities (TAU) Fellowship Programme TAU is a national programme that seeks to advance teaching quality by developing leaders and change agents in teaching and learning across all public higher education institutions. The TAU programme developed three cohorts of fellows and in 2023, 49 more fellows were added to the South African Higher Education landscape. These fellows will play a pivotal role in driving teaching and learning transformation in their disciplines. The programme has applied for further funding from DHET to continue this prestigious programme aimed at enhancing teaching and learning and students’ success. The next TAU intake will be in July 2024. A recent addition to the TAU fellowship programme is the TAU fellows Award, of R100 000, which aims to recognise and support TAU fellows (either individuals or groups) who have contributed as effective change agents and made an outstanding impact on the advancement of teaching and learning in the South African Higher Education sector. All 5 short-listed candidates for the TAU fellows’ award demonstrated excellent scholarly pedagogical teaching practices and were innovative and reflexive. The 2023 winner Prof Elmarie Costandius from the University of Stellenbosch demonstrated a commitment to addressing social injustices from a perspective of possibility rather than deficit. Sadly, Prof Costandius was involved in a fatal car crash earlier this year. It is hoped that the award will enable the institution to continue with the innovative work that she pioneered. 2023 ANNUAL REPORT DIVISION FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE 64
