2023 Annual Report | Division for Teaching Excellence

FIGURE 4: HIGHLIGHTS OF 2023 STAFF DEVELOPMENT Academic Preparation Programme (APP) and follow-up workshops It is imperative that staff who are new to UJ are provided with opportunities to systematically introduce them to the institution, their role, and the resources available to help them in their roles as academics. This is particularly important as most academic staff are discipline specialists who have not been taught how to teach. To this end CASD hosts the Academic Preparation Programme (APP) which explicitly aims to introduce academic staff to principles and practices on teaching and learning that are relevant to the UJ context. Two induction sessions were held in 2023: 25 – 27 January (semester 1) and from 11 – 13 July (semester 2). In addition to the induction workshop, CASD also facilitated 22 staff development workshops on specific topics to help staff learn with expert facilitators and reflect on their practices. Feedback on the sessions was positive and participants found these workshops engaging and very useful in their own practices as teachers in higher education.
