This expansion, requiring an investment of R18.75 million over three years, marks a significant milestone in the program’s growth, enabling it to support 100 positions. By 2023, UJ successfully filled all 1003 allocated positions, demonstrating a diverse and inclusive recruitment strategy: 84% of these positions were filled by designated candidates, with a gender distribution of 34% male and 66% female. Notably, 92% of the Assistant Lecturers are South African, aligning with the university’s transformation goals. 3 AL Post number flacuates due to contracts coming to an end at various times during the course of the year. Since its inception, fifty-eight (58) ALs have been appointed to full-time and fixed-term contract positions at UJ. Four (4) of the absorbed lecturers are now nGAP scholars. In terms of the progress made in their studies, data indicates that in 2023, sixty-eight (68) ALs were registered for master’s degrees, and twenty-one (21) registered for PhDs. There has been an increase in the number of ALs pursuing PhDs at the university.
