2022 Annual Report | Division for Teaching Excellence

Academic Preparation Programme (APP) and Follow-Up Workshops Preparing academics, particularly newly appointed academics, is essential for quality learning and teaching. This is particularly important as most academic staff are discipline specialists who have not been taught how to teach. The CASD attempts to address this by running an Academic Preparation Programme which explicitly aims to introduce academic staff to principles and practices on teaching and learning that are relevant to the UJ context. Two induction sessions were held in 2022: 26 – 28 January (semester 1) and from 12 – 14 July (semester 2). After the academic preparation programme for staff new to UJ, CASD facilitated 19 follow-up workshops on various topics of relevance in the higher education sector over the course of the first semester, and 8 follow- up workshops during the second semester. Feedback on the sessions was positive and participants found these workshops engaging and very useful in their own practices as teachers in higher education. The tables below illustrate workshops facilitated in the first and second semester and the number of participants who attended these. 2022 ANNUAL REPORT: DIVISION FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE 60
