2022 Annual Report | Division for Teaching Excellence

Teaching Innovation Fund (TIF) The Teaching Innovation Fund (TIF) was set up to support staff to become more innovative in their teaching, engage in research in teaching and learning, and contribute to teaching and learning in higher education. This initiative is aligned with the University’s strategic goals to support the development of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) through the provision of funding and expertise. The field of SoTL provides academic staff with the opportunity to reflect on and conduct research on how their teaching practice can become more responsive to the changing needs of students and in society. In February 2022, the Division issued a call for faculties and departments to submit project proposals to be considered for the Teaching Innovation Fund. The Division received an overwhelming response to the call. A total of 36 proposals were received. The proposals were evaluated by a committee comprising Dr Kirti Menon, Ms Gloria Castrillon, Dr Kibbie Naidoo, Dr Angie Magabane and Ms Meagan Strydom. A total of 29 projects was recommended for funding. Of the 29 projects, four are from CBE, one from CAT, two from Education, nine from FADA, two from FEBE, one from Health Sciences, three from Humanities, one from Law, five from science) and 1 (each from CBE, Humanities and Law. Due to limited funds, allocations for projects could not exceed the set amount of R50 000. it is expected that faculties and departments also contribute towards funding shortfalls. Table 17 presents the amounts allocated per project. The second TIF publication was issued in August 2022, showcasing these teaching and learning innovations titled Teaching Innovation for the 21st Century: Showcasing UJ Teaching and Learning 2021. In this volume, 19 papers showcase the teaching innovation projects funded through the TIF in 2021. This volume presents a set of papers that have taken advantage of a greater reflective distance from the immediacy of ‘emergency remote teaching’ experienced in 2020. Together, the papers in this volume present a set of logical and thoughtful initiatives that innovate across a variety of domains in higher education. The 2022 funded project will be featured in the 2023 publication. The list of funded projects and project leaders by faculty is shown in the table below.
