2022 Annual Report | Division for Teaching Excellence

Initiatives in Support of the Academic Journey Symposia and master classes The Division annually implements a variety of academic and professional development initiatives aiming to create an enabling environment to support teaching and learning while also enhancing their wellbeing. The intention underpinning these sessions is the reflective sharing of rich academic journeys with the academic community. Sessions such as these provide academic platforms for discussion and engagement to model practice and share insights into different strategies that could improve teaching and learning, particularly given the continuation of remote teaching. The highlight of the series was hosting one of South Africa’s renowned novelist, poet and playwright, Prof Zakes Mda on the 26th of September 2022. In total, these sessions were attended by approximately 2 275 academics. The evaluation of the sessions demonstrates high levels of satisfaction rate and that staff derived value in participating in the sessions. The figures below provide snapshots of participant feedback of the sessions. Feedback from workshop participants Approximately 2 275 academics attended these sessions A very interesting and muchneeded initiative at UJ. Thank you for starting this conversation. As a first-year lecturer, I can confirm that it is a struggle for most students to express themselves in English. I love hearing all African languages. And always wished that I could talk it fluently. This presentation inspired me greatly. This is very insightful and we should have more permanent teaching and learning communities This session was so powerful. Academics really have to do a lot of introspection in their journeys and in engaging with students. Relevant, Enlightening, Informative, Practical And Very Helpful, Refreshing, Interesting, Engaging and thought-provoking. Very interesting sessions. I will definitely be trying out some of the ideas. There are creative ways of ensuring engagement from your student which facilitates the learning process 2022 ANNUAL REPORT: DIVISION FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE 49
