Assistant Lecturers’ Development Programme The Division coordinates and manages the Assistant Lecturers (AL) Development Programme. The AL programme is an initiative to add stature to flagship departments, accelerate the academic cohort’s transformation in terms of race, and assist in departments with high enrolments and an unfavorable staff/student ratio. The programme budget makes provision for 75 ALs in each academic year. The implementation of the Assistant Lecturers programme progressed well in 2022, with 67 posts filled by December 2022, eight (8) posts were vacant by the end of 2022 and in the process of being filled. Four (4) were awaiting HR approval and four (4) with the departments, identifying suitable candidates. All the positions have since been filled. In August 2022, the MEC granted approval of funding to support an additional 25 AL positions for the university at a total cost of R18 750 000 over a 3-year period bringing the total number of ALs to 100. The filling of the 25 AL posts began in December 2022 and all 25 posts have been taken up. Table 15 below presents the number of ALs by faculty in 2022. The data shows that 81% of the ALs appointed in 2022 were Designate, with 80% being African, 63% female and 37% male. The programme has been instrumental in developing a pool of young academics who become eligible to apply for permanent positions as they become available. Some have been able to successfully apply for nGAP positions. TABLE 15.
