[ 4 ] [ UJ TRANSFORMATION UNIT n APRIL 2024 ] Embracing Transformation: Cultivating Excellence at UJ Embracing Transformation: Cultivating Excellence at UJ One of the illustrious stories about the University of Johannesburg (UJ) is its transformation since its birth 20 years ago, following the merger of what used to be exclusive, racial enclaves into an inclusive and diverse institution of higher learning. UJ’s transformation isn’t just a goal; it’s a journey of continuous evolution, anchored in a commitment to fostering diverse perspectives and social responsibility. Transformation permeates every aspect of our institution’s ethos, ensuring that each member of the University Community is immersed in it. At the helm of this endeavour is the Transformation Unit, a dynamic force dedicated to addressing transformational imperatives within our staff and student communities. Under the auspices of the Chief Operating Officer, the unit also interfaces with the Management Executive Committee Transformation Committee (MECTC). This committee is instrumental in strategising, executing, and evaluating our overarching transformation agenda and ensuring alignment with our institutional vision and global aspirations. Our mission at the Transformation Unit is clear: to champion and coordinate institutional transformation initiatives that not only align with UJ’s strategic objectives but are in line with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) transformation mandates. By spearheading strategic directives, supporting cultural integration, and empowering line managers to navigate change and diversity, we pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable campus environment. From overseeing internal processes to promoting diversity, equity, Inclusion and belonging (DEIB), the unit remains steadfast in its commitment to excellence. In addition to advocating for compliance with transformative imperatives, we actively promote gender equity initiatives, combatting genderbased violence (GBV) and supporting survivors. Our collaborative efforts with the MEC members ensure that our transformation goals are seamlessly integrated into the broader higher education landscape. Recognising both the challenges and opportunities inherent in diversity, UJ remains steadfast in its commitment to driving positive social change. Rooted in the national imperative to reshape South Africa’s higher education landscape, our institution’s culture reflects the vibrant tapestry of the Johannesburg metropole. As our student and staff demographics mirror the rich diversity of our community, transformation becomes not just a goal but an intrinsic part of our identity. In essence, transformation isn’t just woven into the fabric of UJ − it defines who we are and guides our journey towards excellence and inclusivity. EDITOR’S NOTE Dr Mpume Mkhize
